A nameplate is a large block of mother of pearl inlaid at the 24th fret with letters cut out and filled. Full names, initials, dates, and even symbols can be incorporated in the design.
When the guitar has a tulip tip detail, we can extend the inlay to fill in the space just below the 24th fret and follow the curves at the end of the fingerboard.

MORE ABOUT NAMEPLATE INLAYS

White mother of pearl is the best for nameplate inlays. It provides the most contrast for the black fill (a combination of Ebony dust and black glue). Black Tahitian and gold lip mother of pearl are options, but the shell's color may fade to white on the outer edges due to the large inlay size.
Nine letters fit comfortably on a 4-string bass, and we’ve fit as many as ten letters on a guitar. Once, for a robotic heart surgeon, we cut a normal sinus rhythm instead of letters. There’s plenty of room for creativity in this area of personalization.
While we usually inlay the nameplate in place of the 24th fret position marker, there are many examples when it’s below the fret at the end of the fingerboard.
