MORE ABOUT INITIAL INLAYS
One way to personalize your Alembic is to have
your initials inlaid. Frequently found at the 12th
fret, we can put them anywhere that works with the
overall design.
There are a few different approaches to
initial inlays. Letters cut from shell, typically white
mother of pearl, are the starting point for design
because the contrast is greatest with Ebony
fingerboards. Black Tahitian mother of pearl is a good
choice when you want something decorative but a little
more subtle. Abalone is beautiful, but note that the dark
figuring is unpredictable upon sanding and sometimes blends
into darker fingerboard woods. Silver also makes an
excellent material for inlaying initials.
If you have oval inlays on the rest of the fingerboard,
it's sometimes nice to incorporate an oval with your
initials, either by cutting through the oval and
filling with black or another cut shell, or by inlaying
a silver border around the letters.
